 Q. How much will my insurance increase after a minor fender bender? (ballpark figure please)? after 11 years of error free driving and on-time insurance payments, i managed to back into someone in a parking lot going about 1 mph.
my car was not damaged, except for a scraped bumper sticker. the other driver had cosmetic damage only, and being the good guy that i am i gladly helped her navigate the insurance claim. i figured that if it was my car that was dented, i would want it taken care of. do onto others, right?
anyway, the total payout of the claim was $556. that's roughly seven months of my premium payment.
so, how much can i expect to see added to my yearly premium? 10%? 20%? more?
also, how long will it take to "recover" back to my previous rate?
finally, considering that i've paid this company much more than $556 over the years, how much of an increase should i accept before i start looking for a new carrier?
this is technically my second insurance company - i was on my parents policy until i was 22 (i'm 27 now). so i haven't been with them forever, but i am not ready to jump ship unless they really screw me.
thanks!
"Most insurance companies don't care about the dollar amount of an accident..."
Okay here's the bad news:
Most insurance companies don't care about the dollar amount of an accident. An accident is an accident in their eyes. If they decide to increase your premiums, it will be in the ballpark of 33% for the first year and slowly go back down as it becomes older. The rate change will take place on your renewal.
Now the good news:
Most preferred companies expect these things to happen from time to time and your rate may not go up. If your driving history is otherwise spotless and you've been with the company for 5+ years they may not increase your premiums. Some companies now offer a form of accident forgiveness which guarantees your rate will not go up. You do pay extra for this optional coverage though.

 Q. Fender bender consequences? i got into a minor fender bender...well ok, my car was fine, his door was...not.. anyway, we both have 2-way insurance. we exchanged info and all that, and the cops were not notified. i want to know if other then an increase in insurance rates, are there any other consequences?
"You bought insurance to be insured..."
You bought insurance to be insured. Simply report the accident and let your insurance co. do the job you "hired" them to do. There are no " other consequences".
People worry about rate increases so much that it dulls their common sense.

 Q. How much will my car insurance go up? i just had my first accident. a minor fender bender where my car collided into the rear of another car. the damage to both our cars was very minimal. i have a puncture or two in my grille, other guy had black marks from where my license plate edge hit the bumper. my insurance is already going to cost me $900 to claim it because i'm under 25; now how much is my premium likely to increase to?
i am in australia btw.
If you are certain the other guy is not going to try claiming on you, DO NOT MAKE A CLAIM.
First of all, take numerous photos of your car, in case he does try to scam you, to sow how little damage you had (which has a lot to do with what damage he might have had). Sometimes people say it's nothing, then their friends persuade them to claim, like a whole new bumper etc. (It's best actually to take pix of their car, too, with your phone camera, at the time).
If you only have a little grille damage, that will cost a LOT under $900 to fix. You can really fix it yourself, with help from a friend. As long as it is only the grille, go to a wrecker yard and buy a new grille that is not damaged.(Ring around first). Find the bolts or screws that hold it in, and just change them. IF there's a tiny paint scratch, $9.95 buys you a spray can of matching paint from Auto One or Robbo's Spares or similar accessory shops.
Even a new one from the dealer's parts store is going to be less than $900.
IF you really feel you can't do it yourself, ask the local mechanic or panel shop what they'd charge to put it on, if you buy the part. Even if you are in a small town where there's nowhere to buy it, ring around and get a price. Askl the mechanic "Ford in Sydney says $390 for the grill with freight, so how much for you to put it on?"

 Q. Fender bender question...? i was at fault in a fender bender a few months ago, it seemed that there was little damage to the other driver's bumper, and she convinced me to not call the police or file it with my insurance company. she called me later saying that there was more damage than she thought, and she got an estimate of about $700 to fix it. i had a mechanic friend look at it who noticed rust on the sides of the bumper, and questioned the reasoning for the estimate's proposed bumper replacement. i told her that for $700, i would need to go to my insurance company because i'm financially strapped, and i again listened to her, and verbally agreed on a private settled payment plan with her rather than going through insurance - she kept saying that i would have to pay even more eventually because of increased rates and surcharges. i've paid her $200 so far, and i just don't feel at peace about this... and just want some other points of view... should i ask her for the $200 back and just go through my insurance?
"Use your insurance now..."
Use your insurance now ! (if it isn't too late) like you should have used it in the beginning. What will you do is she comes back again and says now her back hurts and she needs extensive medical treatment and oh, some more $$$ for pain and suffering. This is a perfect example of the foolish notion that "settling on your own" is the way to go.

 Q. You know, i've been thinking about car insurance...? here's my idea.
instead of teenagers paying out more, what if at 16 everyone started at the same price of insurance (the type of insurance agencies like geico and all state not withstanding) and have a 6 month check point where someone will assess if you're the cause of a fender bender, if you've gotten a ticket, etc and there have a certain increase of insurance.
for ex:
dinting another's car - 5 dollars more.
damage to bumper - 10 dollars.
broken door or glass - 20 dollars more.
and the insurance agencies could focus on the individual person, not just statisically. there could be like one insurance agent per person who keeps up with one individual and meets w/ them every six months.
what do you think?
"Damage to bumper - 10 dollars."
Yeah, I'd get YOU to hammer it back, sand it, prime it, paint it, polish it, then pay your taxes on that $10 and see how you cry and squeal for a rise!!
Ahh come on, the problem is only related to inexperienced kids wanting to drive cars too powerful for them with money they don't have and insurers not wanting to pick up the pieces and rightly so.
If you were so humble to get a 25 years old 1 litre 4 cyl car and PAY CASH for it you'd see clouds starting to disappear

 Q. Is this a good, simple explanation why heathcare costs so much? suppose you could get insurance to fix your car (mechanical repairs, not fender-bender work).
and suppose your boss paid the premium for this insurance, not you.
how long would it take for an oil change to skyrocket in price from 20 bucks to 90 bucks?
how long would it take for a new clutch job to rocket from 700 dollars to 1600 dollars. not only that, but you'd replace your clutch 4 or 5 times whether it really needed it or not.
inflation would stack on top of itself like this:
price for labor would increase.
price for parts would increase.
more "procedures" per mile because it's "free"
no incentive to buy cheaper, remanufactured (generic) parts.
no incentive to wait until next year to get that tuneup that you really don't need
no incentive to rotate your tires to save the treads
no incentive to drive your car carefully - all the repairs are "free"
"You also have doctors that are paying exorbitant liability insurance premiums because of major lawsuits..."
You are on the right track with one of the reasons health care costs so much.
It's a little more complicated then that. Yes having coverage that allowed people to go to the doctor for very little out of their pocket caused them to take advantage. But that alone did not do it. You also have doctors that are paying exorbitant liability insurance premiums because of major lawsuits. Because the doctor pays more he charges more. In addition to that because he is so afraid of making the wrong diagnosis (and getting sued) he orders a million tests that are not necessary. This of course costs more money.
The there is the inefficiency of the medical system. If you go to 3 different doctors for 3 different things you could end up getting the same tests 3 different times. If all medical information was available in a database doctors could see your complete medical history with a click of a button and run only necessary tests. That would save millions of dollars.
Then you've got the point you are trying to make. People do not make educated decisions about their treatment because they do not have a financial stake in the game. Why should I care how many tests my doctor orders? It doesn't cost me anything. Why should I exercise and watch what I eat? There are pills that will keep my heart going...
Hope that is helpful.

 Q. The gate to my complex closed on my rental car! what action should i take first? recently i got in a fender bender. while my jeep is being fixed i have been driving a rental car. last night when i was going through the gate to my complex, it malfunctioned and closed on the car.leaving two noticeable indents and scracted paint.
i denied their insurance and opted for my own which has a 1000 collision deductable. are they going to contact my insurance agency about the damages? i don't need my premiums to increase anymore as i was at fault for the fender bender! the damages looks pretty minor but it wasn't my fault.
should i be getting a lawyer about the gate? contacting the hoa?
Step one is to get an estimate of the damages. If it's close to, or less that $1,000, pay out of pocket. The property owner didn't do anything to make the gate malfunction, so it's doubtful he can be held responsible, but I'd contact him anyway and file a claim for your damages.
What can an attorney do for you other than charge you by the hour for his time?
If you denied their coverage, and have $1,000 deductible, those are choices you made that have now come back to bite you. Sorry.

 Q. Does being black justify or encourage violence and greed? total stranger is threatening my life unless i $? i got in a minor car fender bender - my wife was driving. she dented the rear fender of this guys total piece of crap 1982 buick lesabre, but it was our fault and we felt we should make it right. he immediately started screaming, yelling, threatening to 'beat the hell out of my wife' etc. i asked her to lock herself in the car, and told him to please relax, we can call the cops, insurance, or i can just give him cash for the dent. he refuses cops & insurance, wants cash. i agree he goes and gets an estimate. $1260 for a dent. the car is worth $700. i still agree, since i told him i would pay for it. then he increases to $2000 next day. i refuse, and he starts threatening my life. throws a brick through my window. leaves death threats on phone. he is a black guy, and a ghetto punk. i hate to say it, but i expected this the second i spoke to him, he radiated bad karma. does his 'being black' somehow justify to him his abuse and greed? he calls me racist names,im disgusted
these answers are all amazing, they cover the feelings and thoughts ive gone thru since it occured. friday it happened, following friday he gives quote, and i call my lawyer (mom & dad both law profs) he says 'you committed a crime by not reporting it, but so did he and its not high priority, since he doesnt have your dl# or insurance info, and you never saw his, all you have are phone #s why, *why* are you considering giving this asshole *anything*? he is obviously taking you for a ride and being abusive and so on to boot. change your phone # and forget it" i refused, feeling 1) we were at fault and so had an obligation to cover his dent (car is full of dents - only area without them if it was done) and we would like to be treated the same way, and i felt this guilt for having intruded on and ruined his night. but he immediately started with all the loudmouth "boy, you gonna pay me, and pay now or i will make you wish you never born, you trying to rip me off, you're all the same"
i have done nothing but be polite and legit and agreed to overpay him at this point, its a week since the dent, he took that time to get to me with estimate. i agree to pay, and tell him it will take a week or so to raise that much $. the next day the real abuse and threats begin, and the raising the ammount. also i do some net research, he has 19 criminal convictions, and owes the state a lein for *ahem* 2,800$ - the amount he finally said he required or he would 'make what was left of our lives hell' and started vandalizing our home. i cant prove it was him, cops say 'cant fingerprint a brick its all circumstantial' when i ask about this and say i can file report if i want but it wont matter until he does something significant they can charge him with. i changed phone #, told him he can have 1300, original amount but only if he signs waiver and accepts that day. he refuses, claims head gasket blew caused by the dent, wants more $. i feel racist for thinking 'typical, if he was
some wasp in a bmw it would have been at least a insurance deal, probably no death threats. i feel racist because i thought "oh, he is acting in exactly the way i expected the second i saw him, and he is reinforcing the negative images of young black men in oakland today. at the same time i ask myself (and friends) "am i racist because i thought 'here comes trouble' the first 5 seconds of this event, and he has just proved and totally, unashamedly the worst sterotypes without apparent care that he is demonstrating a sort of parody of a culture - black males in america - which is under seige from its own negative self image (rap emphasis on guns, sex and drugs) and the society which (as i am doing with revulsion for my reaction and the reasons he is so blatently providing) would prefer to never have to deal with this issue. after all, prison is almost a guarantee, and unemployment in oakland age 18-35 black male is 50-80%. i see this issue and think "no wonder i'd never hire this"
"Any fender bender over 400.00 has to be reported..."
any fender bender over 400.00 has to be reported, so ya'll committed two crimes in this.
1) not reporting it.
2) him for threating bodily harm.
I would report the accident, and report the threat.
I bet his "estimate" goes down.
Being anything does not justify anything, that results in verbal threats and money sniffing.
