when the display states you must replace the cartridge, just press the STOP button (lower-right button) for about 5 seconds and the printer will continue to startup screen. remember not to print! you now have manual override on the print function. just use as scanner. works for me!

I have the same problem. I have to change my black ink and color ink at the same time. If I replace only the black ink it will not print even if I ask to print in black and white only. It keeps asking to change the color ink and I can`t print anything. I am really disappointed with Kodak, there should be a way to bypass this - logically asking to print in black and white should bypass this problem, but it doesn`t.

first remove all the cartridges and clean the pcb of the cartridge and the inner pcb section with the cleaner. Then change the cartridge which is showing empty. Restart both the pc and the printer

The black cartridge does not have a chip. Only the color cartridge has a chip. Since it only has two electrical points of contact, the chip is limited in what it can do. I would guess that the chip is some kind of RF and that internal to the printer itself it can read the RF ID and then resets a counter when it gets a new RF ID. My guess is that it resets both the black and color cartridges at some ratio at the same time. It may however, just reset the color. I am checking now, if I print only in black and white if it considers the color empy at the same time as the black. I will post a note after the evaluation. I have extracted the chip from the color cartridge and can see it under the scope. I will try and reverse engineer it to see what the functions are.

I am very sorry but to make a print, your all-in-one printer needs to have both the black and color ink cartridges installed. If either the black or color ink cartridge is missing or out of ink, the printer or the printhead might not function properly if a print is made.

Someone said: You're lucky if you can get any of the Kodak AIO to work properly and not guzzle ink. I got an ESP-9 refurb from Kodak because I complained so much about the printheads on my 5500 needing constant replacement. Now I've just gotten the out of black ink message and while I didn't keep count I doubt if I ran more than 50 pages through it and maybe one or two photos. Sure the ink is cheaper. You have to replace it more often than other brands. My rant. Sorry.

you can`t . if your printer doesnt recognize the cartridges then they are not truly compatible. I get cartridges for my epsons for free at http://ccs-digital.com/free-epson-ink.asp I pay less than $3 and then get $3 back for the empties and they always work

you don`t make your printer recognize them. they should be recognized automatically. if your printer doesnt recognized the cartridges then they are not truly compatible. I get cartridges for my epsons practically free at http://ccs-digital.com/free-epson-ink.asp I pay less than $3 and then get $2 back for the empties.
