"Find a location also that will allow you to have a car lot..."

You need to first get in touch with the state office that handles the issuing of a dealers license to show you the criteria to meet i.e Like how long of a lease you have to have on the location, size amount of bonds to post and much more. find a location also that will allow you to have a car lot, and either buy or lease it. You also might need approval from the local city to put a car lot in a location and may have to file paper work there too and get it approved. Only after you have obtained all the permits and licenses will you be able to acquire inventory, and this will demand either a line of credit from a bank, or lots of cash. karen James

Q. Do you have to have a dealership liecense to open a used car lot?
i was wonderin if you need a dealership license to open a used car lot, if its one of those buy here pay here things i didnt think you did. i was told that you can have a certain amount of cars on the lot before you need one but if you have over x amount then you do, how does all that work. i plan on opening a car lot and i would like some information about it because i have alot of questions. and if you do need a dealership liecense where would you go to get one in north carolina, where would you go to get the dealer tags and all that other good stuff to, thanx everyone. yah i dont live in fl, i live in north carolina and that doesnt answer my question, read the question again

Yes you will need a dealer's license. You also need to be bonded and secured, pass a background check and not have certain offenses on your record. Your credit will be checked, as well. A business license is required, along with the dealer license. You must have a physical location to sell the cars, it cannot be out of your home. Contact your state's business licensing agency, as well as the Dealer Division, which is likely through the DMV office or the Dept of Transportation.

Q. I would like to open my own used car lot in texas. whats the first step?
what license is needed and how many cars can you start off with to open a used car lot?

"New car dealers also need to have a..."

Texas is a very big state, and reliable vehicles are a necessity for getting around its wide-open spaces. With so many Texans owning motor vehicles, the auto sales industry boasts high-volume turnover. To regulate this trade, the state subjects Texas automobile dealers to many legal restrictions and requirements. Number one among the requirements is that you fill out application forms―stacks of them. The Texas Department of Transportation has just issued, for the first time, a dealer manual. This is not yet available online, but a you may complete a request form to obtain one. It'll help you understand the business you're entering. Application Requirements General Distinguishing Number For a new dealer in Texas, the first step is to obtain a General Distinguishing Number (GDN). This requires, among other things, a permanent place of business, signage in accordance with regulations, and sufficient space to display five vehicles of the type the dealer intends to sell. You'll need a GDN whether you sell new cars or used. If you also (or instead) sell motorcycles, RVs, or other trailers, you'll need a separate GDN for each class of vehicle. Each original GDN costs $500; it is only $200 to renew. The necessary forms can be downloaded in PDF format from the Motor Vehicle Division's licensing forms page. Note that franchise dealers (new vehicles) and independent dealers (used vehicles) have different forms and instructions, so be sure to download the appropriate files. The licensing forms page also provides handy links to the portions of the Texas legal code that apply to both new and used auto dealers, so it's quite a useful resource. Franchise Agreements for Selling New Cars In addition to the GDN requirements, new car dealers also need to have a franchise agreement with the manufacturer of each make of new car they sell. This doesn't apply to used car dealers, who can sell any make and model. Finance Licensing In addition to the GDN (and the franchise agreement, if applicable), a new dealer in Texas needs a license from the Office of Consumer Credit Commissioner (OCCC). This separate license pertains to all aspects of motor vehicle financing. You can download the OCCC's Motor Vehicle Sales Finance Licensing Kit, which contains the necessary application forms. Additional License Types Other vehicle-related business licenses offered by the Texas Department of Transportation include the following: * Converter license * Intransit license * Lease facilitator license * Lessor license * Manufacturer/distributor license * Representative license Application forms for all of these licenses are available on the licensing forms page in PDF format. You can view, download, save, and print the forms using Adobe's free Reader software. More regulations for Texas car dealer licensing are detailed in the State of Texas Vehicle Code, Chapter 503. Further Resources Applicants may benefit from networking with the major car dealer associations in Texas during the application process. These organizations also offer seminars, classes, and other support for would-be dealers. The Texas Independent Automobile Dealers Association specializes in used car dealers, while the Texas Automobile Dealers Association primarily serves the franchised new car dealer community. The State of Texas also offers seminars designed to guide dealer applicants through the process and make sure they have enough information to operate their businesses in accordance with the many laws that apply to them. i am going to open a used car lot within the next 6 months. i have the property already, and have been a car salesman for about 2 years. what are the things i need to do before i open? insurance, auto auctions, financing, pay plan etc....

"Business and you will probably answer a lot of your own questions in doing..."

You need to write a business plan first and foremost. That will be your road map for running the business and you will probably answer a lot of your own questions in doing research for the plan. Here's a good starter article on business plans http://www.home-business-expo.com/8142006_BusinessPlans.asp.

Q. I currently buy and sales cars to the people in my neighborhood but i would like to open my own car lot?
i have been sale cars since 96 but i never thought i could open up for business i just kinda feel into it when i was getting my first car but now its 2009 and i am still saleing cars but i have no car lot, no business experince, and no help, but i have come up with a name for my company but i would like to know how would i get my future career off the ground.

"For a car lot could run a lot..."

in this economy - you're better off staying like you are - rent for a car lot could run a lot, then you have to have cars ON the lot and you have to work a lot of hours (60-80+ a week) to be there when customers would be looking - which would be mainly evenings and weekends - if you have been selling them for 13 yrs, how can you say you have no business experience - what have you been doing - all under the table illegally and not paying any taxes?

Q. Is it illegal to take your car back from an open tow lot?
my brother in law lives in denver. his ccar was towed last night and he took a cab to the tow lot. his intention was to pay the fees and head off but no one was around...the office was unlocked but vacant and his car was parked right out in front so he drove off with it? how much trouble can he get for driving off in his own car especially when he went to get it and no one was around to release it to him.

"A person whose car is towed has no reasonable expectation of immediate service..."

Yes, it is illegal. The fact that no one was present to help him has no bearing on the matter. Depending on the states the laws vary (and I am not familiar with Colorado legal codes) but it is likely some type of Theft of Service. A person whose car is towed has no reasonable expectation of immediate service. The fact that no one was present has no bearing on the matter. If your friend contacts them immediately and agrees to pay all the fees, they MAY choose not to prosecute. However, it is possible at this point they have already called the Police.

Q. Can i lease a vacant lot and rent out parking spots to customers? and maybe open a car dealership?
can i lease a vacant lot and rent out parking spots to customers? and maybe open a car dealership? heres the thing, i am working on my auto dealers license, but now i need to find a lot... i don't need a lot, but i have to get one because it is required if you want to obtain a retail or wholesale dealers license.... i also wanted to lease out a parking lot and rent them out to customers to help me pay for lease... can this be done?

It depends on zoning and what the owner will let you build. I doubt you could sublease, but you can always ask. The big problem with a sublease like that is if you are evicted the landlord has to evict all of those too and it could get very costly.

Q. Theirs two kids in my apartment parking lot trying to open all the car doors?
their going though car by car trying to open the doors i really want to call 911 but i dont what to get involved. as in id rather not talk to the police face to face... is that possible? yea, no my car stays locked but thanks tho.

People like you are why kids get away with crimes like that. You don't have to get involved you can file an report without giving your name. Just tell them that there are kids going through cars, report it as suspicious activity and they will send an officer over to investigate.
