if while you cough or inhale you feel sharp pain under your left breast then there are many several reasons for this as explained now. it can be due to the mensis or menstural period that occurs every month to ladies for the whole week and that also causes the ladies pain on starting their periods. so this may be one of the cause of the pain .

hi there, i am a 27 year old male. i have the following enquiry if anyone could potentially help? i am just now getting over a chest infection/virus that i have had for over 2 weeks. throughout this illness i coughed so hard in the early stages to try and bring up phlegm that i am now left with a sharp pain directly over my left breast that radiates in afew directions, towards my windpipe and under my armpit going the other way. sneezing, inhaling too deeply and coughing invoke a tremendous sharp pain in this region. the skin when touched feels warm and is tender in afew places. i have heard that you can cause muscle strains or even rib damage if you cough too heartily when you have a virus and this can cause this aforementioned discomfort. my dad recently procured a gel from the doctors called voltarol to treat a frozen shoulder and i wondered, do you think it is okay to use this gel on a location like over a breast. my parents seem to think that it will help me ease the pain from the muscle strain i have on my chest thanks to 2 weeks aggressive coughing. has anyone else ever used voltarol for something similar and did it do the trick for you?. the gel contains aspirin which i am not allergic to as i take anadin extra capsules when i get migraines. thanks in advance!! dave uk

Voltarol is the brand name for an anti inflammatory painkiller called Diclofenic.I am not a doctor so cant advise you properly but I did work in a hospital pharmacy and my advise would be to go and see your doctor. You do appear to have strained muscles and I would think an oral painkiller would be better that something you rub into your skin. I would not use the item that was given to your father as it was prescribed for his problem which is totally different to yours. Go see the doc who might be able to give you something better for your problem.
