In comparison to mcafee and symantec , symantec is the better option. As symantec blocks all the viruses and the updates of symantec are also fast as compared to mcafee .Thus, symantec is better for the person`s system

because i'm in the military, the government provides us free antivirus software for our home computers. but the only choices are symantec av, mcafee av or trend micro av. but which one is better? keep in mind that they are free, full versions, with free updates. i don't really care to hear about other avs that are available, just which of these are better? thanks for the help in advance. ma2 thanks for the help, so far, it seems like more people like symantec. i do have a really good computer (was at least 10 months ago) 2 gigs ram, fx-55 overclocked to 2.8, xfx geforce 7800. i do a lot of gaming.

I've tried all three. Although Norton may be the most common antivirus program, I found it and McAfee difficult to completely uninstall if needed. Also these two are huge drains on your computers memory. Trendmicro does a decent job and offers the free online scanner Housecall.

which one is better? please don't suggest avg, avira, avast, bitdefender, malwarebytes, superantispyware, or any others. oh yeah, microsoft security essentials is very good. i have the installer saved on a thumb drive.

I have been a PC tech for a long time and my opinion is that Symantec/Norton is very over-rated. It hogs a lot of computer resources, making it run noticeably slower and is also not that good at detecting viruses. Plus it can really screw up your machine. I have never used it on my computers. I just see the bad results from other people using it on theirs. I use McAfee on all my systems. I currently have 8 personal licenses for all my PCs plus for my other family members. Nobody ever has a problem with it. The only thing I suggest as a tweak is to stop McAfee scanning all files on the real-time protection - set it to scan program files and documents only. After that you would hardly know its there and it offers great protection.

I Use McAfee Without any problems , They offer a whole range off support, something that you wouldn't find with free AntiVirus, Also Automatically updates itself without telling you(you can change it to tell you first), So you be the judge, its either Symantec or McAfee P.S -♥α&ΗμτΘ&Η m!&Hrα♥ mentioned McAfee Security Center is Not a Security Application, however McAfee security center is the interface where you can access your products, And it comes with all the products.

they're all the same thing. Norton McCafree (symantec) let 3 trojans slip into my system, and I got a virus. Avast found and removed them all, Norton is better than nothing, but not much. Try Avast or AVG (both free) way better protection. <edit> yes you can uninstall norton, I did
