 Q. Occasionally i get cramps that give sharp pain when i breathe? i just had one; it came without known cause or warning. fortunately it lasted only 30-60 seconds, and it seems to have died down gradually.
when i try to breathe i have sharp pain in my rib, to the side of where the xiphoid process is. i can breathe, but so shallow that i quickly feel as if i am suffocating.
what is this or what can be done?
Everyone gets those. I get them too.
Someone once told me it was due to fluid buildup in the lungs.
Whatever it is, it is harmless and usually goes away in about a minute.

 Q. What is this sharp pain when i breathe in deeply? i get a sharp pain in my lower back sometimes when i breathe in. usually it stays for about 5 minutes, and i've been getting it for about 2 years. this time it isn't going away, it's been here for about an hour.
i think it might have something to do with slouching and not eating enough..
You should see a doctor. This could be many things and you don't want to take any chances. In the meantime, sit up straight, and eat a little better (smile)

 Q. My left lung has a sharp pain when i breathe in deep? so it hurts to breathe in deep.
it goes away only if i dont like run or do stuff fast.
but the more i run or do something fast the pain hurts more. its like a sharp pain. and its only in my left lung. i did a have ciggarete this morning but i dont smoke often. usually once a week. does anyone know whats wrong>?
"It is helpful to calm down and breathe slowly for awhile (hard to do..."
Could be pleurisy, an inflammation of the lining of the lungs. I have had it off and on since I was 14. It happens more after I've been sick with the flu or other virus, and I don't smoke. It also happens when I change from warm air to cold air (wintertime outside) or if I laugh really hard. Feels like a knife cutting and it is helpful to calm down and breathe slowly for awhile (hard to do when you want to double over with pain) and it finally eases up.

 Q. Sharp shoulder pain when i breathe deeply and laugh? all of a sudden this past week i have been having a horrible sharp pain in my right shoulder everytime i breathe in and laugh. some parts during the day its really bad and sometimes its not. it hurts at night sometimes its hard to sleep.
"Because of how badly this pain can hurt and it sometimes causes..."
Sometimes gas can get caught around that area as far as build up and cause these pains that you notice (an example only).
You could also be dealing with something called costochondritis, which is an inflammation of the cartilage around the ribcage (another example only).
Because of how badly this pain can hurt and it sometimes causes you to have a hard time sleeping at night I would recommend seeing your doctor for further evaluation of the situation to see what they say.

 Q. What is this sharp pain i have when i breathe? i have a sharp pain that has been happening for 5 days now, every time i breathe from my collar bone to my shoulder, front and back. it sort of subsided but got worse this morning, what the heck is this? could i have a pinched nerve or something?
"Also you should try to avoid chest breathing as this will weaken your..."
I was diagnosed with costochondritis at first, but then they figured out that it is chronic myofascial pain (which is very similar to fibromyalgia). You probably have a trigger point (a knot in the muscle) - most likely several if you have had this for some time. The trigger point is most likely in your pectoralis and intercostal muscles and the only way to relieve a trigger point is to put pressure on it (Use a broad tip marker on the pointy end - I like those fat sharpie's and consider buying a THERACANE - it is a great tool for the back!). Your external intercostal muscles are responsible for expanding your ribcage when you take a deep breath. It will hurt when you press on the trigger point at first and lots of times they refer pain (you will press on the trigger point and feel the pain else where). The pain will be felt at first but then it should gradually get less and less. You have to work out the trigger points (consider seeing a massage therapist who does myofascial release - I tried electro-acupuncture but it was NO-WHERE NEAR AS EFFECTIVE as massage therapy) and you also have to stretch your back, neck and ribcage (do a pec stretch). Remember that anything affected in the back will also be affected in the front and vice-versa. To do a pec stretch (which stretches your pectoral muscles, sternalis, and intercostals) stand in a doorway with your arms against the door frame in an "L" position (and keep your bicep at shoulder height and lean forward. You should feel a stretch in your upper chest. To stretch the neck (re: sternocledomastoid and scalenes) sit in a chair with the feet flat on the floor and arms by your side relaxed. Tilt your head to one side and hold when you feel a stretch. then do the other way. Also for the scalene muscles in the neck tilt the head to one side while seated in the chair and then at the same time turn your head upwards to the ceiling and hold. Also you should try to avoid chest breathing as this will weaken your Sternocleidomastoid Muscle in your neck (it assists you when you need to get extra air when taking a deep breath) - Make sure you try to abdominally breath - even if it hurts! Also make sure you sit with feet flat on the ground and your back straight and not slouched as this can lead to developing trigger points in your back & neck in the scalenes (re: neck) and in the rhomboids and trapezius in your back & other places. You may also have trigger points in the sternalis muscle (the very middle of your chest). You should consider buying the the book by Claire Davies called "The Trigger Point Therapy Workbook". Trigger points can also create sattelite trigger points.
Good luck to you. I got my diagnosis from a Thoracic Surgeon, but you can also see a Rheumatologist.

 Q. I have this sharp pain near my lungs, and when i breathe it really hurts, what is it? ok, about every month, i get a sharp pain near my lung. i cant breathe, because th pain is so bad. i breathe really lightly. it hurts alot and it goes away after a couple of minutes, once it lasted a whole night. it is weird, but i have to stay still when the pain happens, because if i do anything it throbs.
"And try and breathe very lightly..."
I have the same problem, never lasted a whole night. I find keeping your back hunched and still causes least pain, and try and breathe very lightly, and sit down. Im 16 now and it came back a few weeks ago, before that I hadn't had it since I was 13.
I never went to a doctor about it, but that is probably what should be done!

I also read somewhere that it could be air leaking from your lung.

 Q. Sharp lower back pain when i breathe in deeply? i did some skull crusher exercises (where you lie on your back and lift dumbbells using your triceps), then after i got out of the shower i started getting sharp back pains in both side of my lower back when i breathe in deeply.
the pain is around the area where the rib cage ends, but in the back. the pains are like quick shocks and happen when my lungs are pretty much filled with air.
anyone has an explanation for this?
"If you're having pains when breathing..."
I would go to your local emergency room. If you're having pains when breathing, this is not a good sign, and needs to have some immediate attention to make sure that you didn't either break a rib, or puncture a lung or the pleural membrane around the lung.

 Q. How come sometimes when i try to breathe deeply, there is a sharp pain in my left side by my heart? i get a really sharp pain near my heart when i try to breathe deeply, but these only last about five minutes...what's wrong? is it serious? i'm only 16!
it isnt serious at all! we learned about this in science class recently. it is just apart of your stomach going inbetween your intestine a little bit. it is very common and some people think that it is a heart attack. it will go away soon. it is truely not anything serious.
